Lack of Transparency to Blame for Mine Conflict: Suu Kyi

RANGOON — Speaking as the head of a commission investigating last week’s 
violent crackdown on protests against the Letpadaung copper mine in Sagaing Division, 
opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi said on Thursday that the problem stems largely 
from the lack of transparency surrounding the project.

Burma Ranked Among Most Corrupt Countries

Despite recent reforms, Burma was again listed as one of the most corrupt countries 
in the world in a survey by Transparency International (TI) on Wednesday, 
which ranked it as the 5th-worst country in terms of public sector corruption 
among 176 nations. TI said reforms had not improved Burma’s ranking, 
as new anti-corruption measures remain tentative and their impact 
has yet to show up in its research.

UN, Burmese Officials Discuss Rohingya Citizenship

BANGKOK — The United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs 
and Emergency Relief Coordinator,Valerie Amos, is meeting with Burma's 
President Thein Sein after visiting displaced peoples camps in Rakhine and Kachin states.  
Amos is expected to discuss the sensitive issue of citizenship for the Rohingya, 
a persecuted Muslim minority, as well as improving conditions and aid access in the camps.
