Burma signs deal for new power plant to serve Rangoon

An agreement to build a new 500-megawatt gas-fired power plant has been 
signed by the Burmese Minister for Electric Power No-2, Khin Maung Soe, 
the state-run media said on Sunday. The plant could be completed in about 
one year, said officials in an article in The New Light of Myanmar
the official state-run newspaper.


Suu Kyi unable to give public speech during Mae Sot trip

During Aung San Suu Kyi’s final stop in Mae Sot on her brief 
whistle-stop tour in Thailand, the opposition leader was met 
with swollen streets, discord and reports alleging that the 
Thai government prevented her from publicly addressing 
Mae La refugee camp.

Thousands of miners protest government order

rallied after an order from the Ministry of Mining demanding 
the suspension of all mining operations across the country 
left them jobless.
