Suu Kyi says she will take Latpadaung crackdown issues to authorities

Burmese opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi said she will ask the authorities 

why peaceful protesters were driven violently from the Monywa copper mine site.

The National League for Democracy (NLD) leader called for calm on Friday morning 
as she delivered a 30-minute speech to more than 3,000 people on the bank 
of Chindwin River near Monywa in Sagaing Division.

Mandalay monks protest copper mine crackdown

Some 200 Buddhist monks staged a “sit-down” protest at Eindawyar Pagoda 
in Mandalay starting at 1:00 pm on Friday, to protest the violent crackdown 
by riot police on peaceful protesters, including hundreds of monks, 
at the Monywa copper mine site in Sagaing Division.

Suu Kyi Finally Condemns Copper Mine Raid

Burma’s opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi says violently driving off peaceful 
protesters at the Letpadaung copper mine in Sagaing Division was wrong.

“People have a right to know why they were forced off, which was unnecessary. 
I will ask the authorities today,” she told a crowd of thousands on the banks of 
the Chindwin River near Monywa on Friday morning.

Burma Army Torches Kachin IDP Camp

A temporary displacement camp was set ablaze by Burmese government troops 
in Muse Township, northern Shan State, on Wednesday, according to the head 
of the Kachin Relief and Development Committee (KRDC).

Doi Pi Sa, the chairman of the KRDC, told The Irrawaddy on Friday that all 
of the temporary houses were destroyed but there were no reports of casualties 
because the inhabitants had returned to their nearby villages a month ago.
