Police Break Up Protest by Burmese Farmers

27 October  2011 

Burma’s police broke up a protest by about 56 activists, mostly farmers, demonstrating 

in Rangoon against land confiscation by the government, a protest that tested the limits 

to which President Thein Sein’s new administration would allow public anti-government 

demonstrations.

Chiang Mai (Mizzima) – The Federation of Trade Unions-Burma (FTUB) has welcomed
a new Labour Organization Law giving workers the right to strike and negotiate
with owners, but the government must put the law into practice, FTUB Joint Secretary
Dr. Zaw Win Aung said on Wednesday.

Recent worker registration gives workers more confidence, security

Chiang Mai (Mizzima) – Thailand currently has more than 1.45 million legal Burmese migrant workers, but an estimated 500,000 illegal Burmese workers did not register for work permits in the recent round that has just concluded, according to experts.
