Burma’s public assembly law is flawed: HRW

(Mizzima) – Burma’s new law on the right to peaceful assembly falls far 
short of international standards, Human Rights Watch (HRW)
said on Wednesday.

More than 2,300 villagers in the town of Anyarphyar have signed 
a petition against the construction of a hydropower dam on the river 
outside their village in Tenasserim Division. The petition was sent 
to President Thein Sein on Monday.

Sea Port Plans Unveiled in Mon State

Representatives of the Tala Mon Company met with the chief minister 
of Mon State, Ohn Myint, on March 12 in Moulmein where they 
unveiled plans to construct a one-billion-dollar seaport at Kalegauk Island.

Law on free assembly falls short: HRW

Permission to demonstrate must be sought five days in advance and 
applications can be rejected at the discretion of authorities without the 
possibility of appealing to a court. Even slogans have to be pre-approved 
and anyone found in breach of regulations face up to one year in jail.

Civil servants, army to get pay rise

Burma’s parliament has agreed to a pay rise for civil service workers 
and troops that could see some earning twice their current salaries.
The move is seen as a means to combat rampant corruption within 
the government. Influential parliamentary speaker Shwe Mann said 
in February that current salaries were too low, contributing widespread graft.

South Korea wants more investments in Burma

(Mizzima) – Representatives from 85 South Korean private companies 
will meet with Burmese counterparts during an economic cooperation 
forum in April to enhance trade between the two countries.
